When we lived in England, we had a cat named Hugo and though he didn’t belong to a particular breed he was still a wonderful cat with a grey silky coat and very loud purr. Our one and only American cat lived with us in our early days in Los Angeles, we named him Tiddles and while he was also of unknown breed he had a very definite personality such that our Doberman always made sure to give him a respectful and safe distance when passing.

In England cats, not from a distinctive breed, tend to be referred to as Moggies and Tiddles but as the same does not hold true in the US we settled on the name common cat for all domestic felines of unknown origin.
